Mini-Mustangs Fall 3-2 to Port Washington

The GU12 Mineola Mini-Mustangs came up a goal short in a physical and fast-paced game against the Port Washington Panthers.  Port Washington’s goalkeeper consistently turned aside first half close-in shots by Mineola’s Christen Patalano and Allison Lamonica to keep the game scoreless at halftime.  Taking advantage of a questionable non-call by the referee, the Panthers scored the game’s first goal on a play that appeared to be offsides.  Minutes later, Mineola’s talented fullbacks, led by star center-back Jillian Palma appeared to trap their opponents offsides again, only to have a call not made again.  Play continued, leading to a second Panthers goal and a 2-0 lead.  Gretchen Keller’s perfectly placed free kick set up Alana Conroy’s first goal of the season to get Mineola on the scoreboard, but the Panthers quickly struck back with a terrific shot by a Port Washington midfielder that ripped by the gallant effort of Mineola keeper Cara Kennedy.  The Mini’s never gave up and soon closed the gap again off a rocket of a shot by Lamonica.  Mineola couldn’t come up with the equalizer and the game ended at 3-2.
